With some of the largest brook trout in Newfoundland swimming off its shores, Indian Bay has always been known as one of the top ten trophy fishing spots on the east coast. Unfortunately, over-fishing and increased access have depleted both the fish population and the quality of the environment.
Local residents, however, have taken on a challenging and exciting venture to revitalize the brook trout stocks. Realizing the tourism potential of this unique region, the volunteers of the Indian Bay Ecosystem Corporation are committed to a cooperative conservation effort to protect and sustain the watershed.
This Community Memories exhibit is a “fish story,” but residents will tell you it is not a fantasy. Visitors can compare photos and fish stories from the past and the present to see that the 50-year outlook for the Indian Bay Recreational Fishery is very positive.
