The French Block

The French Block

Glace Bay Heritage Museum 2009

“Something I cannot define, not put into words, a feeling that it must not end with an old worn-out building. Its loved ones gathered about the country. We were a people, 43 children and adults. We shared a very special and important time together, the common language of survival.” -Audrey Newton Currie

The French Block was an “apartment” building that existed from 1920 to 1956 on South Street in the coal mining and fishing town of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. This exhibit is the story of six families, living in their four-room apartments, who became a tight-knit community.
