Traditional Boat Building of Winterton

Traditional Boat Building of Winterton

Winterton Boat Building Museum 2004

Winterton, Newfoundland and Labrador, has a long boat building history tied to the settlement of the area and its traditional way of life. Our exhibit shows the boats that were built here, their use in the inshore fishery, and the boat building skills that were handed down from one generation to the next for at least 400 years without any written records, plans or instructions. You will be taken through the steps of building a traditional Winterton fishing boat and introduced to some of the many builders, as well as to the research student who studied and recorded the methods used here.

The museum would like to give special thanks to Hilary Cass and Fred Green for their tremendous contributions to our Community Memories project.
