But all was suddenly changed with the drafting of the Force's able-bodied men to World War I and the rapid devastation caused by the Spanish Flu. The culmination of these two world events saw the loss of some ten million people, 56, 000 of which were Canadian, and 41 of these, local men.
The community of Fort Saskatchewan never lost sight of its fallen members and when the war ended in 1918, the town threw a huge Welcome Home celebration complete with a parade led by the town police, a picnic in the woods, and a full day of events on the Fair Grounds.
