Tom Mallin's son with Rabbi Lieberman, it's his Bar Mitzvah. He is communing with his rabbi in front of the Aron Hakodesh. (Marlene asked, "And the rabbi?") This is Rabbi Lieber . . . Lieberman, Rabbi Lieberman. Actually Lieberman was not an ordained rabbi but he could act as a rabbi. He was a well educ . . . actually came to us from Israel. This was his, one of his first jobs when he landed in Canada. He spent several years here where his English improved tremendously. And he was very active in the synagogue and uh, especially after Rabbi Rabinovich left and went to uh went to Detroit. He sort of took over for him. But when he left us he went back to Toronto and went into business and opened a large bookstore, which was called Lieberman's Book Store.

One of the features of note in the Synagogue was its Aron Hakodesh. The centre of worship of any temple is the Aron Hakodesh. The Aron Hakodesh is generally set along the eastern wall of the synagogue and holds the scared texts or Torahs of the congregation.

At its height, the community sought to renovate their synagogue, adding a new hall, kitchen and library. The renovation led to a rebirth of the building and also of the congregation. The congregation chose to move from the Orthodox denomination to the more modern conservative denomination. Family members who once worshipped separately now could worship together.

When the synagogue was rebuilt, they eliminated the balcony. Uh, men and women were allowed to sit together on one side if they wanted to. But one section of the building was reserved for men only. But if families wanted to sit together they, you know, you couldn't buck that anymore, if people didn't want to be orthodox any more, so they compromised, you know, they, a lot of things were done in English, I mean not everybody could speak Yiddish anymore. I mean I could speak Yiddish . . .

The congregation struggled along with the community after the Second World War as the town population began its unrelenting decline from its peak in 1939. The Jewish congregation in 1937 numbered some 125 families. That number would be halved by 1950, and halved again by 1969. By the mid-1960's the synagogue congregation was encouraging all of its members to attend services to ensure that a minyan could be formed on a regular basis.
