Wrestling at the Armoury!
The Aurora Banner (May 1, 1947)
Earl McCready lived with his wife in Aurora during the 1940s and early 1950s. A legend in the wrestling world, Earl was the Canadian amateur heavyweight wrestling champion from 1926-28 and was the flag bearer for Canada in the 1928 Summer Olympics. In 1930 he took the gold at the first First British Empire Games, later known as the Commonwealth Games, before turning pro. As a pro Earl fought in matches right into his fifties. While the outcome of this match is not known, Earl did beat Whipper Billy Watson on several occasions during his career. What a treat for the people of Aurora to have witnessed!
