Mackay negotiated the sale of the Coldstream Ranch. It became known later, that he had also accepted a commission from the seller. Lord Aberdeen’s solicitor and hired agricultural expert felt that he had paid too much for the property and livestock. In the end, $5,000 was taken off the total price.
