Wood from Butternut Trees

In the Langtons’ journals and letters, there is a lot of reference to the Butternut trees that grew at Blythe Farm. Butternut trees produce an edible and nutritious nut. First Nation people used the nut oil for cooking, hairdressing and leather-making and polishing tools.
Butternut trees are soft and vary in texture. This sideboard, which was in the Langton home, is a wonderful example of the varying textures and colours. The two doors have carved fish in the centre panels.
