Altar Guild for St. James
Photo is of the altar at St. James in Fenelon Falls, Ontario in 1919.
The photograph here is of the altar as it appeared in 1906 when the third church of St. James was completed. The purpose of an Altar Guild in the Anglican Church of Canada is to care for the altar, furnishings, linens and to prepare the altar for each service. The Altar Guild also cares for the sanctuary of the church and prepares the sanctuary and chancel for service. In church architecture, the chancel is the space around the altar including the choir and sanctuary. The Altar Guild cares for the objects used in worship and handles them with care and respect, as these objects have consecrated in prayer for use in worship for the glory of God.
