The Altar at St. James the Apostle
Photo: Peter Oliver
This image is of the current communion table or holy table, circa 1920. There are three panels on the front. Left pane has A for “alpha”; the middle panel has a coat of arms for the Church of England; and the right panel has an upside down U for symbol “Omega.” There is a candle at each of the two front corners of the communion table. The altar is made of local trees and measures 180 cm x 90 cm x 120 cm.
The children placed the holy table or altar in memory of James and Mary Ann Jane Cameron. Mr. Cameron was Superintendent of the Sunday school & Sexton of the two St. James churches. Both Mr. & Mrs. Cameron were at one time, employees of James Wallis; she as a maid in Wallis’ house which is now the Fenelon Museum; and he, as purser on the Wallis boat.
