Antoine Labelle took a particular interest in history and philosophy during his studies, and Auguste Nicolas was among his favourite writers. Nicolas sought to prove that religion and the sciences could be reconciled. He had a clear influence on the thinking of Labelle, who was a forward-looking man fascinated by progress and possibilities of science.
