A Curé Like No Other

I dunno if he was hard on his parishioners… Er, for sure… Listen, he was a man with a fiery temper, so… and nobody’s perfect. Curé Labelle wasn’t perfect, and he probably made all kinds of mistakes, said things that hurt people but, y’know, for sure he didn’t really mean it. I think he was a profoundly good man.

Children must’ve loved him… just ’cause he had these facial expressions… he could convey… You could read his moods in his face: he was super expressive, so I’m sure… And so entertaining. He must’ve made the kids happy… I’m sure people played tricks on him sometimes ’cause he was the perfect person for it. (laugh).

All the letters I’ve dug up show Labelle was a guy with a sense of humour, and self-deprecating like you wouldn’t believe. He loved a good laugh, and in fact he was mad about funny stories, er, and burlesque!

He loved… like, say if he went up North to see the settlers, or whaddaya call ’em… the lumberjacks; sitting round the fire at night, they would tell the most outlandish tales imaginable, and he found them so funny. Like that, y’know?
