The first bulk bin in the Okanagan, 1957

Gordon Shaw, Manager of the Vernon Fruit Union’s Winfield packinghouse developed a new method of handling apples and with a crew of men, built the first five hundred bulk bins in the Okanagan. When those five hundred bins had made two trips each to the orchards and back to the packinghouse filled with apples, they had carried the equivalent of 25,000 apple boxes.
If Bulk-handling of apples and pears continues to prove as satisfactory as the present experiments, there will be no doubt as to its acceptance in the Okanagan Valley. The new slogan could very aptly be: ‘For more apples per day; Try the bulk-bin way!’ (Kelowna Courier, August 12, 1957)
