The size of the standard apple box was 10 x 11 x 20 inches, inside measurement. When fully packed it contained 40 pounds of apples for a total weight of about 44 pounds. The boxes were made on-site of shook wood, nails and wire, and skilled box makers, always men, could build them at a rate of fifty to ninety boxes per hour. In 1942, the packinghouses began installing electric box-making machines and the skill of the box makers was no longer needed.
