The telescope and dome were completed in October, 1916, except for the mirror. John Stanley Plaskett was eager to show off the magnificent machine! He invited local amateur astronomers and other influential people to see the telescope in action in October 1916.
The image was taken by Edgar Fleming who took over 100 images of the telescope under construction. Included in this image is Francis Napier Denison who arrived in Victoria in 1998 as a member of the Dominion Meteorological Service. He was instrumental in getting a weather observatory built in Victoria in 1914.
