Newspaper headline announcing the new telescope for Victoria

The May 13, 1914 proudly announced that the largest telescope in the world would be coming to Victoria. It had pictures of those “instrumental in getting huge telescope for Victoria. Prime Minister R.L. Borden, Minister of the Interior Dr. W.J. Roche, Member P.H. Shepherd whose committee promoted the project and B.C. Premier Richard McBride.
The newspaper noted that the project involved an expenditure of at least $200,000 (almost $6M in current money). It would also “establish Victoria as one of the leading astronomical stations on the face of the globe”.
