In October 1936, planning a flight from New York to London, Mollison bought the American Bellanca aeroplane, The Irish Swoop. The Irish aviator, Colonel Fitzmaurice, owned the plane and had entered it in the Melbourne race two years earlier. However, authorities refused to allow it to race, stating that it was not airworthy. Mollison renamed it Dorothy.
