Pilot Oliver LeBoutillier (center) and Mabel Boll (right) at the Harbour Grace airstrip. Boll was in a race with others, including Amelia Earhart, to become the first woman to cross the Atlantic as a passenger.

Other female pilots were competing for the same record: Ruth Elder – a New York actress, Lilli Dillenz – a Viennese actress, and Frances Grayson – an American socialite.
