In 1972 Alfred Temmel, local artist created a series of 4 wall murals, painted in the Bavarian tradition on a wall at the Harbour House Hotel, Salt Spring Island. “The murals are Temmel’s own creation, and they centre on the history of Salt Spring Island, with episodes from past years.” Driftwood newspaper, April 27, 1972. On the far left is the story about John Craven Jones. The lyrical text says:
“Say.
Without any pay
For ten years to teach school
One must be drunk or a fool.
John C. Jones was neither.
He was a teacher!”
During a later renovation this mural was covered over with wood panelling and then in 2017 was exposed during a renovation. This photograph was taken at this time. Sadly, the mural was beyond repair. The Salt Spring Island Historical Society photographed the wall before it was once again covered up.
