“Dandridge House” built by John and Charlotte Dandridge
BC Black History Awareness Society
This house has been relocated, stripped of its architectural details, sold, and lived in by different families over the years. Having been restored to most of its original details by the current owners, it is referred to as “The Dandridge House” commemorating the Black pioneers, John and Charlotte Dandridge who built the house in 1862.
In February 2014 this plaque was installed to commemorate the house and its first owners. The images are of the house circa 1872 in its’ original location on the north-west corner of Johnson and Vancouver Streets, Victoria. Circa 1898 it was moved about 1 block north to its’ current location on Rudlin Street. The house was then stripped of its’ verandah and other architectural details as shown in 2004. The lower left picture is the Victoria Pioneer Rifle Corps that John was a member of.
