Giscome Portage Trail
Kevin Creamore, Prince George
The original Giscome Portage Trail was only wide enough for foot passage; approximately 8.5 km (5 miles) long. It crosses the Continental Divide as the shortest route between the rivers emptying into the Pacific Ocean and the rivers emptying into the Arctic Ocean, providing a link for north and south water-bound travelers. The trail is mostly a forested route but some places are soft grass while other sections are hard-packed earth.
Circa 1903 the trail was widened to accommodate transporting supplies on horseback in the summer or by dog team in the winter.
