Bedrock of Beachville: The History of our Limestone Quarries
Explore how limestone was mined during the early days of Beachville’s limestone industry with only hand tools and wheelbarrows. Meet some of the earliest figures of the limestone industry, the individuals who bought properties to mine and established kilns for burning rock into calcium-rich powder. Find out why land on the east side of the village was abandoned and how land to the west continues to operate as some of the largest open-face limestone quarries in the country. Through this exhibit, we invite you to listen to the stories of former employees and to view a selection of artifacts from the Beachville District Museum’s collection.
