Cole & Hacker was a recognized dealer in lime and building stone. The company hired hands to mine, burn, and transport limestone. It was heavily intertwined with other businesses in Beachville. For example, cashbooks show regular expenses for repairing and replacing reins and horseshoes at local tanneries and blacksmith shops. The company purchased oats and straw from local farmers for the horses they used to haul their limestone products to market. We know that many of Cole & Hacker’s products were transported on local roads, as numerous toll-road fees are outlined in their financial records.
