Circa 1900

Set kilns were replaced by larger draw kilns. Draw kilns were made of steel and lined with brick. They measured 25 feet high and 12 feet across. Draw kilns held roughly 35 to 40 tons of rock and produced about 9 tons of lime daily. The image above was featured on a postcard from the early 1900s and shows the draw kilns operated by the Downing-Bremner quarries in Beachville. You can find further information about the later development of vertical and rotary kilns by clicking on their names.
