The kiln shell from the former site of Standard White Lime marks the trailhead of the Limestone Valley Trail. Kilns are machines used to transform limestone into quicklime by subjecting the stone to extremely high temperatures (exceeding 1000°C) for an extended period.
This particular kiln structure and gear were originally part of a kiln used in 1977. This kiln was recently dismantled due to necessary repairs in a particular section. Approximately 6 million tons of lime passed through this specific shell and gear over its operational lifespan.
