A didactic explaining the history of the rotary kiln components along the trail. The signage reads,
“Kilns are used to convert limestone to quicklime by burning stone at extremely hot temperatures (over 1000 °C) for several hours.
Currently, Carmeuse Beachville has two rotary kilns located at our Centre Plant. This walkway is an old piece of a kiln with the gear attached. The gear rotates the kiln at certain speeds depending on various conditions.
This specific kiln shell and gear were part of a kiln installed in 1977, recently removed due to required repairs to the affected kiln section. Roughly 6 million tons of lime were passed through this shell and gear. Our quicklime serves steel, mining, non-ferrous, chemical, pulp & paper, construction, agriculture, soil remediation, and many more industries.”
