The Derrick on its Tracks

1910

This image shows the derrick in action in 1910. The boom arm lifts full buckets of stone into a waiting freight car at the north edge of the quarry wall. The jacks swinging on either side from the cross beam and legs keep the derrick from tipping. When a blast went off in the pit, a cable pulled the derrick back on the track.
