“I always to be in the carnival. I grew up in Brandon, Manitoba and Royal American used to play there before the war, and it was heaven, I go down there no one’s left that I know of from that era, and then I went with Conklin Shows in 1944, and went to Brantford with Patty Conklin, and they were allowed ten or twelve box cars, it was limited, it was during the war time and that, and then I got in the, I was going to get in the circus business and I got a lion and another one and I raised three more. They ate me out of house and home and I finally smartened up and I bought rides and started, we just every year.”
“What’s the biggest challenge you face in the business?”
“Pay the fuel bill (Bingo laughing) No, but price of fuel has gone up, its hurting everybody.”
“And what’s been your greatest accomplishment in the business?”
“Well, putting a carnival together and well probably the, out of the west coast we are the biggest carnival out there, and you have the biggest bills to pay too.”
“And how has the business changed since you first got in it, whats been the biggest difference?”
“Well years ago it was easy, now every year there is more regulations, rules and, you know, you gotta be a Philadelphia lawyer to stay in business bout the way to put it. I’m kidding about that, but there’s always more challenges every year you gotta cope with.”
