Coreen Douglas is interviewed about what it was like to experience the numbers of “out” LGBTQ2S+ people in the city.
Douglas: “Another really, really, fantastic thing is just seeing the gays and lesbians celebrating who they are and their participation in the Games in our city. Our city will never be the same; our community will never be the same. People have come up and said to me, “For the first time I’ve had the feeling of what it’s like to be part of the majority. I feel like I’m part of a majority. This must be what heterosexuals feel like every day.” And it’s a shock to us. And I think that the gays and lesbians who have been proudly wearing their name tags and their t-shirts and openly celebrating their gayness around town are very courageous and it’s just very inspiring. I don’t want people to leave. I just wish they could stay and we could have this every day of our lives. It’s not too much to ask. If every gay and lesbian could come out, could feel safe, this is what we could have – we could have a life like this.”
