Excerpts from Dancelebration! performances at the Commodore Ballroom are the backdrop to an interview with Committee Co-chair, Daniel Collins, about the event.
Daniel Collins: I work as a dance publicist. After a life of performing this is what I ended up doing. And…when I heard there wasn’t going to be a dance component in the cultural festival of Celebration ‘90 because they were having trouble getting acts booked I thought, well, I could get this together because I think it’s rather important for gay men – a lot of gay men are involved in the world of dance – and I thought this was an absolute opportunity to exploit that fact and have a very gay positive, lesbian positive, component in the cultural festival.
So, we’ve got this dance event called Dancelebration. It’s August 9th and 10th. It’s been a lot fun getting it together and the choreographers have donated these choreographies for the benefit of Celebration ‘90.
The people who have volunteered coming from the world of dance – a lot aren’t gay or lesbian again – but they just think it’s a very important thing that it’s happening, and that it’s just a very active exciting show. [music begins] It’s the largest program of modern dance ever represented in Vancouver in one evening.
