Excerpts of Gayla! performances at the Orpheum Theatre including comedian Kate Clinton, Heidi Archibald, Katari Taiko, and Betty.
Comedian Kate Clinton: “So I told my dad I was coming to the Games and uhh..no, I said the Gay Games because I am trying to be more open and honest with my father about my life…and I told him on the phone… and even though we were on the phone, I could see this look on his face like, ‘what in god’s name are the events?’..Well, it does give new meaning to bi-athlete doesn’t it?”
Images and sound of the Japanese taiko-style drumming of Katari Taiko.
Heidi Archibald (singing a blues song): “Everybody’s wonderin’ where do the blues come from…Everybody’s wonderin’ where do the blues come from…Well, they come from New Orleans, down on country bog.”
A spoken word performance over taiko drumming (artist unknown): “I suppose it’s because I have small breasts, big fists, walk with hands in pockets, stand tall with a wide stance, broad shoulders and thick forearms, I’m taken for a man. It’s time to talk back. Hey! Don’t call me Sir. Call me strong, Call me sassy. Call me spirited…”
The group, Betty, singing a cappella:
Betty: “Oh never, no I don’t want to say, in the good times, say say, SAY…I wish I may. I wish I might. I wish I may. I wish I might. Someone say good morning not goodnight.”
