Mark Mees introduces the recipient of the Outstanding Contributor Award accompanied by Mary Brookes who holds the award, a basalt sculpture by Nunavut artist, Mathew Aqigaaq.
Mees: “The recipient’s most significant contribution has been her embodiment of spirit and courage, tireless dedication, and our love for our communities that all our volunteers have shown. The recipient of this award is a most deserving one and her participation in Celebration ’90 has had a huge impact on the success of this event. Tonight, Mary and I are proud, to introduce Ms. Marie Belmont as the recipient of the Celebration ’90 Outstanding Contributor Award. Marie.”
Belmont steps up on the dais to applause and hugs Mees and Brookes. She is handed the sculpture and holds it close as she takes to the mic.
Belmont: “Thank you. Three years ago when I first got involved with Celebration ’90 there was just a few of us and tonight, there’s an awful lot of us. So obviously, between the beginning and now, we had to work hard. But my heart shares this award with all the volunteers that I met through these past three years. And one of the most outstanding person with whom I’ve had the pleasure to work is Mary Brooke. (applause and cheers) Let’s have a good hand for Mary! (louder applause and cheers). (She beckons Mary joins her) Come here.”
Brookes joins Belmont on the dais. Belmont places her arm around Brookes’ shoulder and pulls her close. As the applause quietens Belmont continues.
Belmont: “There was only one award, but we’ll share it.”
