In the 1800s, horses were an essential part of the everyday lives of people as transportation, social riding and to work the land. The horses at the cemetery were used to open roads in the wintertime, transport people around the grounds and various other jobs. Also, during the planting season, they transported the flowers and plants to the individual lots.
James Treggett was an excellent horse trainer in his youth. This expertise was precious in the training of the cemetery horses.
