In 1824, James Douglas settled in Utica, New York and started his medical career. Following the cholera epidemics in Quebec, he agreed to take over the administration of the Marine and Emigrant Hospital in Quebec City. When the Quebec Medical School opened in 1848, the Marine and Emigrant Hospital became the first center for clinical teaching. He participated in the opening of a psychiatric hospital in Quebec, now known as University Institute in mental health of Quebec (Institut Universitaire en Santé Mentale de Québec.)
