Lieutenant Henry Edward Baines was a member of the Royal Artillery and died in the great fire of 1866, which destroyed 3,000 homes leaving 15,000 people homeless. He died placing explosives in a home to create a firebreak to prevent further spreading of the fire. He sacrificed his life to save countless others.
The city of Quebec recognized his sacrifice and organized a public funeral with members of the military, government and churches, as well as the mayor was present. The service took place at Quebec’s Holy Trinity Cathedral, and then Lieutenant Baines was buried in Mount Hermon Cemetery.
