Before the merger of both municipalities in 1994, the towns of Vaudreuil and Dorion were distinct. The Dorion municipality was more recent than Vaudreuil, which had developed around the old Saint-Michel parish center.
Dorion is a commercial city who owns its growth to the presence of the Grand Trunk Railway (Canadian National), the Ontario and Quebec Railway (Canadian Pacific Railway) and the Trans-Canada Highway that crosses its territory. In the early 1950s, the town prospered with its motels, garages and restaurants. Consequently, it was decided to establish a new parish and a new church was built on the main street (Saint-Charles avenue).
