The old cemetery was used for burials as early as 1774. However, during his pastoral visit in 1792, Bishop Jean-François Hubert (1739-1797) noticed the lack of a fence around the cemetery and demanded that walls be built around it. The existing fieldstone walls were built the next year in the midst of controversy with regards to the fact that parishioners were required to contribute for the supplemental costs incurred by the fence.
