From 1830, the Anglican local community shared with the Methodist community the location of a small school for its religious services. In 1841, the Anglicans welcomed their first minister James Pyke, and the need to build a church became pressing. Captain Richard Robins, an active member of the community, donated the land on which the actual church was built. Construction began in 1842 and the first official service was held in 1849.
