1798 is the year attributed by Edwin Guillet, in his book Cobourg 1798-1948, to the arrival of Eliud Nickerson, believed to have been the first inhabitant of Cobourg. The original location of his log hut was well chosen as it was very near the current business centre of town, King and Division Streets.
