In its earliest days Cobourg was viewed as a convenient half-way stop between York (Toronto) and Kingston. By boat this was a lengthy and sometime dangerous trip. As late as 1839 the stagecoach trip took 38 hours, with many stops along the way. The train trip today takes about two hours!
This map includes the approximate location of the wreck of the Canadian steamship Homer Warren lost in 1868 off the southern shore of Lake Ontario near Pultneyville, New York.
