Photograph of Sang (Sam) Chun, a member of The Pas Masons. Museum records indicate that he was born on Christmas Day and died on a Good Friday. He came to Canada from Canton, China to Langton, Alberta, where he had an importing business. He moved to Calgary before coming to The Pas, where he operated The Pas Hotel and Restaurant; it no longer exists. He left his family in The Pas, and prospected in the North, and eventually operated a laundry in Churchill for the benefit of the Government Personnel stationed there. Returning to The Pas he started a restaurant next to the pool hall (attached to Dembinsky’s store). He then moved across to where Sam Chun’s Store now is, passing away in 1940. His generosity to transients was renowned. He never refused to help them in need and at times paid for hospital care and operations. He loaned them money for train fare and said “If you ever have the money you can pay me then.”
