Land Acknowledgement
Lougheed House was built on traditional Blackfoot territory in 1891 near the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. The Blackfoot name for Calgary is Mohkinstsis meaning “elbow.” The Lougheed House Conservation Society acknowledges the property is on Treaty 7 land, signatories to which include the people of Canada, the Blackfoot people of the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai First Nations, the Athabaskan people of the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Stoney Nakoda people of the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley First Nations. The land is also the home of Métis people and is situated in what is now known as Region 3 of the Métis Nation of Alberta. The Society thanks the Blackfoot, Tsuut’ina, Stoney Nakoda and Métis peoples, past and present, for welcoming us here.
