At the time of Peggy Beal’s death, the public obstetrical ward in the old Women’s College Hospital could only accommodate ten maternity beds. The Cradle Club tirelessly fundraised for expanded public maternity wards and nurseries, as well as for modern equipment in the new hospital that opened in the fall of 1935. The club believed that an improvement in hospital conditions and obstetrical services would lead to a lower maternal mortality rate in Toronto.
