Digging for Clams
1975. Rosemary Eaton fonds. Cole Harbour Rural Heritage Society Archives.
A common activity among residents of Cole Harbour was digging for clams in the marsh. In the mid-20th century, a bridge greatly reduced the outflow of water from the marsh, upsetting its ecosystem. Because of this, hundreds of clams died, and their white shells covered the estuary like snow. Fortunately, the problem was eventually corrected, and digging for clams continued in Cole Harbour.
