Statue of Saint Joseph
Statue of Saint Joseph, no date

October 31, 1939, La Josuhée schooner was leaving Trois-Pistoles with a shipment of lumber when Captain Jean-Paul Desgagnés and his crew were caught to freezing fog and blown off-course. They grounded on Île Verte. The lighthouse keeper put them up for the night. Come dawn, they found that the storm had completely destroyed their ship. They were able to salvage the motor and part of the cargo in the following days. The shipwrecked sailors also found the small statue of Saint Joseph, lying unscathed on the snow-covered beach, the very same statue that the captain had placed in the wheelhouse to protect the crew. This is the only artifact from the ship that the family has held on to. God-fearing or not, sailors defy fate on a daily basis!
