Building an Historic House

The stone walls of the Doctor’s House stand imposing on the corner of Clyde Street and Queen street in Almonte, a building that has stood in that place since September 28, 1869, when Doctor William Mostyn began practicing in his newly built home and office.
The doctor purchased the four vacant lots next to St. Paul’s Anglican Church in 1867 and had the plans drawn up for a home that would match the grandeur of the illustrious doctor. In the summer of 1868, quarrying began on the site where the cellar of the home would be, setting aside the limestone that would be used to form the stone cladding of the home.
When the home was completed and the doctor relocated, the Almonte Gazette proclaimed that,
the Dr.’s new house is an ornament to the place; it has something of the old fashioned strength and durability about it, and is without doubt the best finished private residence in Almonte.
