Two first-generation EV1s, fitted with lead-acid batteries, charging in Oxnard, Cal., in 1997. Despite a complicated leasing scheme, range limitations, and limited marketing, the few EV1s built inspired “wonderfully-maniacal loyalty” in their drivers, according to GM marketing personnel.
