Pixii Magneto-Electrical Machine, 1832

Hippolyte Pixii’s machine was the first alternating-current electrical generator, using two iron cores and a horseshoe magnet to produce a current of varying magnitude. AC current was of little interest, scientifically and practically, until the 1870s, when it was realized that AC was more efficient for powering electric lighting.
