Honouring a Community – Becca Shron

When Becca Shron was five years old, her family took a drive from their home in Toronto and headed north to Orillia on a whim. They instantly fell in love and decided to put down roots, but once settled, they became aware they were the only Jewish family in the community.

Gold pendants on a thinly chained necklace carry the Star of David, Iron Cross, Jewish character, and Harma hand bearing an iridescent blue stone.

Growing up as the only Jewish girl in her town, Becca proudly wore this pendant necklace containing family heirlooms that date back to the Holocaust.

The Shron’s knew it was important to remain connected to their community, so the family attended a synagogue in Barrie, enrolled Becca in Jewish summer camp, and ensured she remained connected to her heritage and faith. Becca experienced a disconnect while living in Orillia, but the family handled any questions about their background as a chance to educate, rather than take offense.

It was during her time at Twin Lakes Secondary School that art teachers recognized Becca’s talent and encouraged her in her pursuits. From taking part in the youth arts council and exhibitions at the Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH), it was Georgian College’s Museum and Gallery Studies program that solidified her desire to work in the museum field after landing a co-op placement at OMAH.
