Primarily a watercolourist, Franklin Carmichael was born and raised in Orillia, and was the youngest member of the original Group of Seven.
This painting is a prime example of Carmichael’s style. His progressive vision led to his stylizing the rugged wilderness of Ontario within his canvases when interpreting the unique features of Ontario.
In 2020, the artwork went up for sale and was co-purchased for the Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH) at the price of $40,000. Half of the amount was donated by OMAH Board member Doug Frost, while the remaining half came from money raised by supporters. A generous act that exceeded expectations and ultimately lead to the museum starting an Acquisition Fund that will be used to buy art and objects relevant to the history of the Orillia area when they become available.
